Walk down the personal care product isle of any of the major super market and you will be amazed at the number of tooth brushes on offer. In fact the choice is so huge it becomes difficult to choose.

Ultimately, one needs to understand what role the tooth brush is playing and then the choice become simple. The reason we must use a brush is to remove bacteria from our teeth. Brushing along with flossing is the most effective way to do this. Hence the shape, colour and brand of brush becomes quite irrelevant as long as we are choosing the softest brush available.

Electric or Manual?

Numerous studies have shown Electric brushes to be more effective than manual. Click the following link to see an example of some of the research.....(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15651236)

Despite this, not everyone has taken up the technology. The reasons being include the initial cost ($90-$250), the need for electricity, number of people wanting to access the brushes and the cost of replacement brush heads ($10-$25)

At Verve Dental in Bentleigh, we recommend the Oral B 5000 brush. (http://www.oralb.com/products/professional-care-smart-series-5000/)

Points to consider...

1. Always choose a soft brush

2. Never push hard with an electric brush otherwise the gums and roots of the teeth can be damaged

3. Change the brush head reguarly

4. An electric brush does NOT replace floss. Daily flossing is still needed.

5. Attend every 6 months for a regular exammination and clean
